The verses of the music (not the lyrics) are copied from a Gordon Lightfoot song from 1976 about a shipwreck but sung more melodiously to my ears. And the Lightfoot song doesn‘t have any refrain at all (Oh, I wish I was back home in Derry). So while it‘s not completely original, this is a great song. Also with very thought-provoking lyrics, of course

i rember cring when the news that bobby sands died i sobed my heart out knowing we could not have saved his life then we fought hard but bricks and bottles were no match for guns and the army but we tried hard but when we got the upper hand they would open fire an we had nothing to fight back with most of us were teenagers and bare hands ment little but we tried rest well with the other irish heros
