No one has ever did BNS like Hawkins.!! Lester Young was close but Colman was the goat. This was pure magic! First heard this in my history of music (elective) class in college. This unexpectedly got me through that class after hearing it. It also gave me a love and appreciation for the contributions jazz and it’s early pioneers gave to music and the creation of different styles of music such as RnB, pop, rock, rap and so on.
When my son was in college getting a degree in jazz, his professor wanted him to play Body and Soul, but he told him to find and listen to Coleman Hawkins before he played the tune. He sounds great after learning the Hawkins arrangement.
Thanks for the post ! This song allowed me to hone my musical ear: The Ink Spots - "Until The Real Thing Comes Along" and Billy Eckstine " Prisoner of Love".
