I knew him back when. Brilliant man. Sorry he has passed. His music is timeless.

As one can hear, this is not classical music. The portrayal of Don Shirley in the movie, Green Book, is not accurate. This song starts out with what sounds like a musical representation of a cracking whip, but continues into a very nice, entertaining, upbeat piano song. I think that it represents the spirit of the African Americans as they faced slavery, and oppression. Their spirit, like the piano melody, was not broken.

My dad took me to see the Don Shirley Trio in Grants Pass, Oregon around 1965. Still remember the concert with fondness.

This was one of the great African American work songs. The imagery of this video seems out of place.

I’m a Jazz aficionado, and yet, it wasn’t until I watched the Green Book that I learned about Dr. Shirley. This gentleman should, by right, be counted among the Old Masters of Jazz. Maybe it’s because Dr. Shirley’s first love was European Classical whereas Jazz just paid the bills.
