It’s a peculiar fact (among many other peculiarities where it concerns FZ’s music) that Davey Moire, originally FZ’s recording engineer at the time, has fulfilled such a prominent role as a vocalist on various tracks during the period in which albums such as ‘zoot allures’, ‘sleep dirt’ and ‘sheik yerbouti’ were recorded. As far as I know Moire never performed on stage, while his vocals perfectly suited the theatrical content of FZ’s lyrics. At least for me it’s hard to imagine ‘wind up working in a gas station’ sung by someone else (although it has been on the song’s live versions).
This comment section is great. People who worked in gas stations. People with random, inscrutable but clearly precious memories of 1976. People talking about Nazis. Deep liner note trivia. People talking about the crazy bass tone and the preposterous 5/4 groove. This thread’s got it all. Goodnight! ✨
