up to this point in recorded history, there had never been a better recording of a drum set. overlooked is the mix of engineer Dennis MacKay, whose records ("Romantic Warrior" another great example ) simply sounded better than any other records of the time when it came to jazz fusion. All the great drummers wanted his mix. Pierre Moerlin provides some of the most memorable, melodic drumming here, every fill perfectly conceived. And, of course, Holdsworth, with some very early compositions and lovely solos
I have the Expresso album on vinyl and the Gazeuze version on vinyl and CDOne of my favorite albums period I also have the Tony Williams Lifetime albums with Allan Holldsworth on vinyl and CD. I love the collaborations with everyone else that Allan Holdsworth worked with, but the Gong, and Tony Williams era are my favorites My first introduction to Allan Holdsworth was with the Tony Williams Lifetime, then Gong. Can’t get enough of that era
one of the great electric guitar solos I reckon, such gorgeous flowing lines. He made it sound so effortless, but I do wonder sometimes if he even made enough money to live. Of all the guitarists of my youth, I miss him the most.
