When you find out this song is about politics

For those unaware, this song was written about the 2008 election.It’s difficult to describe what the political situation felt like, especially in the wake of what has happened with the departing presidency.There was this hopelessness from the Iraq War, which was a repeat of Vietnam. It felt like the USA was doomed to repeat its greatest failures. Anti-American sentiment was high as was a need for hope.There was a genuine catharsis when Obama won and while things did regress 8 years later, it’s interesting to return to a time where young people looked to the future and hoped for the first time.
