Just about to move to live in San Fernando near Cádiz Spain with my Spanish girlfriend and I remembered this song and decided to sing it to her. She had never heard of it and it was funny singing along with it , especially as there is a last train from Cádiz to San Fernando at midnight. She couldn’t understand why someone would write and sing a song about it. Very difficult explaining to her, in Spanish, that this was about another San Fernando.
This was always on the radio when I was a small boy. Definitely late fifties. It also got lots of plays by Stewpot Stewart on Junior Choice in the late sixties on Radio 1.
as a 3 year old I stood on the platform at skegness with my folks after a weeks holiday there was around 500 people waiting for the train home when someone started singing this song within moments the whole platform was singing it , amoving close community feeling
When I was about 5 or 6 my Gran bought me a gramaphone and some 78s - this was my favourite then, and it still is now - I played it so many times as a kid my parents threatened to smash it! Such a great song - unbeatable!
