I think there’s a mistake in the opening bars: “You from before” cannot possibly warn You, from the Present, about the “dangers”. It should be “Future You” warning you about dangers and mistakes you’re going to make. But I think he wrote it that way because it fit the melody and the rhyme much better. Still a great song that had comforted me many times.
