There are many great clarinetists but Pete Fountain had a very special and recognizable sound and a phrasing and attack which set him apart. He also a very good stage presence and personality. Most other clarinetists are like cardboard.R.I.P. Pete....you brought us so much pleasure over the years with your perfect virtuosity
Back in the Fifties, when I was eight I also played clarinet in my grade school band. Pete was my idol. My parents took me down South to hear him in his New Orleans nightclub and of course it was thrilling for me. After the set my mom encouraged me to go up and talk to him, which I did. Boy was I surprised when HE GAVE ME A BOX OF HIS REEDS. (Sorry "Scottie Bob Ross") It was also quite a kick to see Al Hirt tooling around Bourbon Street in his station wagon.
