"Arranged by Quincy Jones". Thanks for the warning. The much over-rated QJ, who had no understanding that less is more, was at work, writing banal washes of sound for the strings and throwing in every instrument he could wave his baton at. Bad luck, Sarah.
I think I have just about every Sass record, CD and documentary (The Divine One -- awesome). Of them all, this is my favorite song of her entire career -- and there were many. But it goes to Number One. Perfect in every respect.
Sarah had recorded an early version, but Q sensed she deserved a musical setting of equal power. Listen to the French horns that introduce the tune then lift Sarah to the level of her operatic strength. "Maria" is also on the album. My favorite Quincy recording with the best singer of my lifetime.
Thank you for sharing this song. My mom had this album when I was a child and I have loved it ever since. Sarah Vaughn was one of kind with such a smooth, velvety voice.
My dad played this album a lot when i was a little boy
and just always loved this song
thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed it and hope it brought back lots of happy memories
