I have to agree with this. Not only is the production much more dampened and surreal, but the very instrumentation is so utterly beautifully distorted, just like on the apex of dissonance in Xasthur’s history, ‘Defective Epitaph’. That applies to all the three remakes on ‘Nightmares at Dawn’ – I love the originals, but the remade versions introduce this… Stockhausen vibe to them. That trio is, putting ‘Walker of Dissonant Worlds’ aside, also as mainstream and catchy as Xasthur songs get…
To be perfectly honest, I haven’t listened to ‘The Prison of Mirrors’ too much. When I want Xasthur, then I want songs that I can’t remember after listening to them for the first time. That said – are you sure of that? I’m by far no expert, but I think it was changed quite a lot (just like how ‘Trauma Will Always Linger’ suddenly had this prominent male chorus when remade for the bonus disc of ‘All Reflections Drained’).
